There is no fear in love (1John 4:17-19)
“Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.” (1John 4:17-19)
Saint John in this passage is drawing our attention that fear is the opposite of love.
How? Because if we fear someone means we do not trust him.
We do not trust his reactions toward what we do or say.
That means that we are not connected whatsoever with this person and we actually do not love him.
And because we do not trust him we are always worrying what that person will do to us and we live in fear.
That is why St. John said there is no fear in love.
If we say by our mouth we love our Lord Jesus Christ,
we trust His words, His promises, and know that He is the almighty Son of God
who came to save us from sin and death,
we should not fear anything on our earth.
Jesus many times in the Gospel said do not fear because I am with you till the end of the ages.
He made it very clear about worrying.
He flat-out told us not to worry.
Jesus told us to ask Him whatever we want in faith and he will answer all our requests.
If we have faith in Jesus, and we trust Him, we must rebuke any evil spirit of fear that the devil throws to our minds and emotions.
He is a liar and the father of lies.
There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear.
God is love and He proved His love to us by sending His incarnated Son to our world to confront the devil in His body, which is our body, and defeated him on the cross.
His love is perfect; therefore, we should have nothing to fear.
I know fear is inevitable sometimes.
It is a major struggle for us all.
We are not perfect, but fear and worry are not part of the equation with Christ.
These attitudes imply a lack of faith.
All we can do is remember that God is sovereign and always in control of all the aspects of our lives as we are His children who received Him and obeyed His commands.
We read in the book of Isaiah, chapter four, saying,
“Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
We, the children of God, should not fear all the devil schemes and know that who is with us is more powerful than who is against us.
In the power of Jesus’ name we are more than conquerors.
Amen.
