We must Be Born Again To See The Kingdom Of God (John 3:3)
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).
Nicodemus was a religious man.
He was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. That is why he came secretly at night to Jesus and had a conversation with Him.
He saw that Jesus was a teacher who came from God; for no one can do these signs that He did unless God was with him.
Jesus did not respond to Nicodemus’ flattery, but very boldly, He told him the truth.
He told Nicodemus something that absolutely shattered his religious categories.
That being religious and do all the rituals will not let him enter the kingdom of God.
Being a minister or a clergyman is not the pass you must have to enter the kingdom of God.
If he is not born again he will never see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus was confused.
How could someone be born again?
What does Jesus even mean by this?
According to Nicodemus’ worldview, he likely would have thought he was doing quite well in his relationship with God.
He was devout, he was teaching others, he was a spiritual authority.
And yet Jesus told him that he had to be born again to see the kingdom of God.
Spiritual life is not inherited, or achieved by good works.
It can only be received by unity with Jesus, the giver of eternal life, His divine life.
When we receive Jesus in us we will have a new nature, a divine nature not a human sinful one.
We have to be born from above and not obey the flesh desires. From Nicodemus’ conversation with Jesus we have learned a valuable lesson, namely, that religious knowledge, just studying the bible and repeating verses by mouth cannot replace our spiritual rebirth and receiving the new nature.
Receiving the new nature has a sign, which is our transformation.
The Holy Spirit transforms our hearts from inside and not our physical appearance. It transforms us to Jesus’ image and likeness. Saint Mathew said in his Gospel chapter seven, “You will know them by their fruits.
Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?
Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” (Mathew 7:16-17.)
The proof of our transformation is that we are filled with the fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are, love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
Those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
If we live in the Spirit, we also walk in the Spirit.
Amen.
