God’s Grace Chases Us Down Even To The End (Luke 23:32-33,40-43)
“There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death.
And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left…..”
Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.
But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?
And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”(Luke 23:32-33,...40-43.)
Jesus was crucified between two thieves, on the right and the other on the left.
One thief joined the crowd in mocking Jesus.
But the other thief rebuked him.
There is something in Jesus that draw him.
He could see that He is different.
We know that the Holy Spirit has work all the time even with unbelievers.
This thief felt the Holy Spirit and could see that Jesus is from God. He said to the other thief “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?”
He saw there was more to Jesus than the labored breathing and the nails piercing through His hands and feet.
This thief believed in Jesus in a situation that no one can believe in Him.
Why?
Because Jesus was on the cross submitting Himself to death, yet He can defeat death.
But it was not the time yet.
When Jesus was on the cross, there was no proof that He had the power of God.
It was a moment of weakness that no one can believe in Jesus.
No ability to encounter Jesus in the cool of night, only in agony on a cruel cross.
But this thief felt the Holy Spirit and He revealed to him who is Jesus.
He knew that Jesus was more than just a religious leader killed by His own people.
The Holy Spirit proclaimed to him that Jesus was the only One who could grant eternity.
He felt that salvation was just through believing and receiving Jesus.
And then, in a moment of raw desperation and surprising faith, he turned to Jesus and said: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom”
Some people take this story as an invitation to wait for a death bed confession to be saved.
That is not true.
This story is a reminder that God’s grace chases us down even to the end.
We have an opportunity every day to submit to the work of the Holy Sprit to guide us and sanctify us to make us holy as Jesus is holy.
Jesus knocks our door every minute to open for Him to dwell in us to give us His eternal life.
Jesus saves those who call out to Him.
We must not wait.
But if today we hear His voice we must grasp this opportunity and open our heats to let Hm in.
Amen.
