We Can Resist Sin Only By The Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9-11)

“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.

Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” (Romans 8:9-11)

As Christians, we know that sin is the spirit of the devil.

Jesus said that the devil came to steel, destroy, and to kill us.

St. James advised us in his first epistle, chapter five, to be sober and vigilant because our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

If sin is an evil and dark spirit so the only way to defeat it is to be in Christ, the Spirit of life and light.

Many of us feel defeated by sin because they have been trying to fight the impulses of sin through the powers of the flesh.

But we have to fight in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Apostle Paul says, it’s only by the Spirit of Christ we can hope to put to death the deeds of the body, and we will live.

The question now is, how do we fight sin in the Spirit rather than in the flesh?

First, by humbly confessing our sins.

Jesus can heal us from sin only if we bring it into the light.

We can only get rid of it by exposing it to Jesus’ light.

Jesus said I am the light who came to enlighten every one.

Second, we must surrender ourselves to the Holy Spirit to sanctify us.

We must obey Jesus’ command to be able to submit our heats and wills to Him to transform them and have the new nature and the new life.

Third, we must memorize the word of God and say it loud.

When Jesus fought Satan, he quoted Scripture that dealt with the specific temptation.

Jesus came armed with the word of God.

And if Jesus felt he needed to use Scripture to fight off temptations, then so should we

Apostle Paul in his epistle to the Ephesians, chapter six, calls the Word of God the “sword of the Spirit”.

Forth, we have to resist the devil’s temptation and not just avoid it.

Jesus said resist the devil and he will flee away.

This is done by the power of the Holy Spirit in us.

Jesus is the One who defeated sin and death on the cross.

If we are united with Him and He dwells in us, by His Spirit we can overcome sin and all the deeds of the flesh.

As Apostle Paul said, if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Amen.
