The Prayer Of A Righteous Man Has Great Power (James 5:16)
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” (James 5:16)
When we sin we become slaves to the devil.
Sin is a very serious matter because it separates us from our Lord, Jesus Christ.
He is the source of life and light.
If we are separated from Him we live in darkness and we die spiritually and then physically.
When we obey the devil’s temptation and sin, that sin wounds our hearts and it makes us grow callous towards Jesus as we choose our own ways over His.
Confession simply means that we go to Jesus and confess the specific sin and we repent.
When we acknowledge our sin before Jesus and others, the grip sin has on our hearts loosens.
As we humble ourselves in front of Jesus and look for His mercy, He brings healing.
Our unity with Him becomes more stronger and we abide in Him.
Also this type of openness that occurs when we confess our sin among believers, unites and strengthens our relationships with them as well.
We can see how none of us is perfect; as we all fall short of God’s glory.
When we share the sins we are struggling with, we move into heart-level conversations that really make a difference in our lives.
We are bringing darkness to the light where it can no longer hold us.
We all must not hide in the shadows, holding onto our sins, but confess it and expose it!
This is where real change begins in us and get transformed to the image of Jesus.
Our unity with Jesus and with each other get stronger.
Then we are given a beautiful opportunity to pray for one another in a very specific and intimate way.
When we confess our sins in front of a righteous man, who is united with Jesus, we will get the support of his prayers.
His interceding prayers for us will be heard and the answered by Jesus.
This man’s righteousness is not of his own doing; it is Christ’s righteousness he is clothed in because of what He accomplished for us on the cross.
If we are in Christ, we can have confidence that God is at work in our lives, pouring out His mercy and grace and transforming us to look more like Christ.
This verse in James reminds us how much we need the accountability and support of our brothers and sisters in Christ as we are all on this journey of sanctification and growth in the Lord until we see Him face to face.
Let us all boldly approach the throne of grace and ask Jesus, our Lord and Savior, for strength to be able to bring our sins to the light, where we can encourage one another to walk in the light as His children.
Amen.
