Pride is A Destructive Sin (James 4:4-8)
“Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?
Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?
But He gives more grace.
Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”
Therefore submit to God.
Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:4-8)
Do not all of us know that the sin of pride goes before our destruction, and having a haughty spirit leads to our fall.
Throughout the Bible, God warns us that He hates the sin of pride.
In the book of Proverb, chapter eight, verse thirteen, we read, "To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.”
Pride leads to our downfall, as highlighted in Proverbs chapter sixteen, saying, "Let us not see ourselves as "wise in our own eyes.”
We should not see pride not merely a simple sin, but it is a serious one that separates us from God.
Today St. James reminds us that God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.
The seriousness of this sin is that it can blind us to our own faults, make us resistant to correction, and create a false sense of self-sufficiency.
It often leads to other sins, such as envy, anger, and dishonesty, as we strive to maintain an image of superiority.
It also hijacks our focus from loving our neighbors to competing and comparing.
When we let sinful pride take over, we forget God created us equally, and subsequently gifts, purposes, views and treats us justly.
We start to credit ourselves with our accomplishments.
We all must let the Holy Spirit sanctifies us from this fatal and killing sin and humble ourselves.
St. James gave us the way of how to get rid of this sin.
First, we submit ourselves to God’s will in our lives.
Second, we resist the devil and he will flee from us.
Third, we draw near to God and He will draw near to us.
Forth, we surrender everything to the Holy Spirit and let Him do the Cleansing process of our hearts and minds.
Amen.
