Be Careful Who You Listen To (Luke 12: 4-7)

“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.

But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell.

Yes, I tell you, fear him.

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?

Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.

Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Luke 12: 4-7)

Many preachers when reading the verse “fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell.”

they assume He is God who kills and throws into hell.

But this is not true because Jesus Himself told us that the killer is the devil.

We read this in the Gospel of John, chapter eight, verse forty-four, ”He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.”

And in the same Gospel, chapter ten, He said that He is the Good Shepherd, and the devil is the thief.

Let us read verse ten, ”The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

And in the epistle to the Hebrews, chapter two, verse fourteen, we read, “Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”

So the Gospel presents the devil as the destroyer and Jesus, the incarnated Son of God, as the giver of life, the eternal life.

Hell is the devil’s place, where he draws people into his own misery, despair, and darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

So we, the Christians, should hold fast to the truth revealed in the Gospel by Jesus Himself, rather than hearing false interpretations from people who call themselves preachers.

Amen.
