Speak Holy Truth Openly & Boldly To The World (John 18:19-23)
“The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.
Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world.
I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing.
Why do you ask Me?
Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them.
Indeed they know what I said.”
And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”
Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?” (John 18:19-23)
Through all the Gospel we saw Jesus’ life on earth was full of challenges, accusations and confrontations with people.
We know there were various times that Jesus chose not to give a defense.
However, there were many times that Jesus, the Son of God, spoke up to critics and condemners.
We see here that He questioned those who wrongfully treated Him, saying, ”If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”
Jesus said that all what He did is according to His Father’s will not His.
He did what Father God told Him what to do or say.
He was not at the will of men, but He was operating according to the will of God with full power.
He can speak up or decide not to, according to Father God’s leading and direction.
It is not true that Jesus did not always do nothing or say nothing.
But He corrected the Pharisees in the Gospel of Mathew, chapter twelve, when they were blaming His disciples doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath for they plucked heads of grain to eat on a Sabbath because they were hungry.
Jesus said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?” (Mathew 12:1-8)
He also defended His self-witness when the Pharisees accused Him for bearing witness of Himself.
Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.
You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.“ (John 8:13-16)
So we must know that we have to say the truth boldly.
To be holy and humble does not mean to be voiceless and fear to say the truth.
We say the truth by the guidance and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.
If we did not reveal the truth, how the world will know the false from the truth.
It is our role, as children of God, to reveal and declare the truth boldly and powerfully without fear but with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
He tells us when to talk and what to say.
Amen
