Cast All Your Anxiety On Jesus (1 Peter 5:6-9)
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Resist him, standing firm in the faith” (1 Peter 5:6-9)
St. Peter is calling us to submit everything to Jesus and cast all our anxieties and worries on Him.
But before he called us to do this, he pointed to an important issue, which could be the reason why we cannot submit everything to Jesus and fully cast all our worries on Him.
The reason is that we are arrogant and full of pride thinking that we can fix our problems ourselves and we do not need Jesus’ help.
He is the last resort to go to. When we fail to do it ourselves, we ask Jesus to interfere.
That is why St. Peter first admonished us to humble ourselves under God’s almighty hands then he called us to cast all our anxieties on Him.
When we humble ourselves we will see that Jesus is the only One who can do the impossible and what man cannot do He can do.
Jesus Himself called us many times to come to Him and He will give us rest. He is encouraging us to rest in Him and it is the work of the Holy Spirit, His Spirit in us to restore, renew, and recharge our minds, souls, and bodies.
When we cast our problems on Him and trust that He cares for us, not only He will solve our problems and give us rest, but also He will strengthen our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
When we rest in Him, this allows us to abolish the devil’s distractions trying to let us focus on the problem that he caused us, and we be able to focus more on Jesus and hear more clearly His voice of guidance and wisdom.
That is why Saint Peter continues to advise us to be sober and alert because the devil, our enemy, wants to devour us.
We must resist him and stand firm in faith. In the gospel of Mathew, chapter eleven, Jesus invites us to come to Him with all our anxieties, and He promises us rest.
So we all must exchange our restlessness for Jesus’ rest.
Amen.
