Do Not Love the World (1John 2:15-17)

"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.

And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever." (1John 2:15-17).

Lust is the power of desiring things that are not from God.

We Lust when we have pleasure in something that does not line up with the will of God; partaking in the pleasures of unrighteousness.

St. Paul defines lust in his second epistle to the Thessalonians, chapter two, as the love of and the pleasure in unrighteous things.

It is the root of all evil.

We can say it is the act of idolizing the love of anything than the love of God.

So Paul is confronting us with the truth, and that is, if we love the world or the things in the world, the love of the Father is not in us.

We cannot deceive ourselves and love two masters, we either love God or the world.

St. Paul explains to us what does love the world mean?

It means the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.

Lust of worldly things and the love of God cannot co-exit.

When you lust you want to please yourself only and this will lead you to fulfill your own desires no matter if this would harm your body which is the temple of God, or harm the people around you and make them stumble.

Why should we not love the world? Because the world is full of the devil’s lusts and temptations.

The devil is the prince of this world.

He tempts us with lust to sin against God and His commands and be separated from His eternal life.

To be a true Christian united with Jesus Christ is marked by holy living, holy love and focus on how one gives oneself to the other, and not to please oneself.

St. Paul in these verses is reminding us that the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God and abides in Him, will live forever.

Amen.
