Do Not Think About Tomorrow, It Is In Jesus’ Hand (James 4:13-15)

“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow.

For what is your life?

It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”(James 4:13-15.)

St. James is reminding us that only our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, who knows what is going to happen tomorrow. 

Expectations and planning are part of our lives. 

However, the challenge of it is that we do not control the outcomes because we do not know what tomorrow will bring. 

As much as we plan, strive, and prepare for our future, we do not know what is around the corner for today or this season. 

So St. James is telling us where our expectations should lie. 

Not in our hopes and dreams. 

Though we are created with a mind able to create, dream, and expect things to happen, yet because we do not know the future, we have to wrap our expectations in the control of God’s will for our lives. 

We must say, “if it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 

So when we sit to plan anything we sit in the presence of the Lord in prayer and do not begin with what we want or desire. 

But first, we should pray asking for Jesus’ will and what He wants for our lives. 

Then we ask for His guidance for the next step we should take in any matter of our lives. 

When we get the answer for our prayers, then we shape our expectations around His will. This will give us a correct perspective as we walk through life. 

We must not forget that God has a purpose for our lives. 

Striving to achieve our desires and dreams and not God’s will for our lives is a fruitless exercise. 

But walking in God’s purpose for our lives will be the most fulfilling.

The greatest satisfaction in life is not when we accomplish what we planned to do, but when we accomplish what God has planned for us to do.
