We Are Called To Be Partakers Of The Divine Nature (2 Peter1:2-4)
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2 Peter1:2-4)
God created man in His image and likeness.
He created him with free will and gave him a direction to follow.
But unfortunately Man (Adam) and Woman (Eve) chose rather to disobey God.
By eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they changed the perfect mode of existence of man, where they were in the presence of God gazing at Him, to the flawed mode of existence.
After they had disobeyed God’s Word, they experienced guilt and fear and then tried to hide from God.
By this act they opened themselves to death after they were living in the presence of God and have His eternal life.
The union of humanity with divinity in the incarnated Son of God, Jesus Christ, restored in Him the mode of existence of humanity, so that those who are united with Him may participate in this mode of existence, be saved from sin and death, and be united to Father God in deification.
And this is God’s salvation plan for the entire humanity.
Jesus, the Son of God, defeated the devil on the cross and gave us His overcoming power over him in the Holy Spirit.
He gave us commands to follow to be able to defeat the devil and be away from his deception and temptations.
The devil is our enemy who envies us and wants us to sin and be separated from Jesus’ eternal love and life.
Following the commandments of God strictly without our heart being in it does not help us, as believers, with our salvation.
Because sin is not about breaking some set of rules but rather, it is the name for any behavior which fails to live up to the higher goal of being in the image and likeness of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
So sin is not viewed as a stain on the soul that needs to be wiped out, but rather as a pervading sickness or a failure to achieve a goal.
It therefore, does not carry with it the guilt for breaking a rule, but rather the impetus to become something more than what we are.
The ultimate goal for our salvation is to be restored back to the image we were created on, which is, the image and likeness of Jesus and have the divine nature.
We are called to be the children of God and be partakers of Jesus’ divinity.
May we all strive to fulfill this precious call and be true children of God.
Amen.
