Forgiving And Reconciling Should Work Together (Mathew 5:22-24)

“But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.

And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’

shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’

shall be in danger of hell fire.

Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.

First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” (Mathew 5:22-24)

Stress in relationships comes when we hurt each other intensionally or unintentionally.

Stress produces negative thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

One of the consequences of having stressful relationships is not forgiving one another.

Unforgiveness dooms us to carry the heavy weight of bitterness and resentment.

We all know that forgiveness is not an act that we can do by our own strength, but it depends on the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in us and its control of our lives.

It is the work of the Holy Spirit in us that enable us to forgive those who trespass against us.

Jesus sad in the Gospel of Mathew, chapter six, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (Mathew 6:14-15)

When we receive Jesus in us in the Holy Spirit, we will be full with the fruits of His Spirit.

Forgiveness is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

St. Peter asked Jesus how many times we shall forgive our brothers who sins against us, and Jesus answered, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Jesus goes deeply into our souls pointing to the root that makes us unable to obey Jesus’ command to forgive, saying, “that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.

And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’

shall be in danger of the council.”

So what should we do when someone trespasses against us?

We should not receive the evil spirits coming along with the wrong spirit, which are the spirit of anger and the spirit of revenge, and reject them.

And to obey the Holy Spirit and let it lead us to forgive and carry out the burden of hurt and feel His peace and comfort.

He will help us in our weakness and give us the power to forgive and love those who wrong against us.

Jesus commands us to first go and reconcile to our sisters and brothers before offering our gifts at the altar.

Amen.
