Hosanna! Jesus, the Humble King Who Saves

“Hosanna To Our Lord, Jesus Christ!’ Hosanna In The Highest!”

“Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her.

Loose them and bring them to Me.

And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”

All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’

...And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

Then the multitudes... cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David!

‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Hosanna in the highest!” ( MATHEW 18: 1-9)

The Jews went out happy to receive the great and strong leader and king who will save them from the rule of the Romans.

They came out with palm branches which was a custom of the Jews as a sign of victory.

But this king did not meet their expectations.

They found Him entering the city, lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.

He is not that king they were waiting for.

They were waiting for a king from this world, who gives commands and has a luxurious, mighty and, great appearance.

But Jesus our King came to our world very gentle and humble in heart.

He washed His disciples’ feet, saying to them,” Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.

I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. (John 13: 14-16)

Jesus was a different King and He set different rules than the kings of this world.

He said, in the Gospel of John, chapter eight, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.”

The prophecy of the prophet Isaiah has been fulfilled, saying, “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.

He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets.

A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory.

In his name the nations will put their hope.”

When the Jews saw Jesus in this humble scene, they were disappointed, and they conspired against Him and plotted to crucify Him and kill Him.

Thus, Jesus was brought to the cross, but He triumphed over all the evil spirits on the cross by His resurrection from the dead, offering salvation not only to the Jewish people but to all those who accept Him.

He confronted Satan and his power of sin and death and defeated him with His life.

Jesus gave salvation to all who accept and receive Him.

May we all be like our King, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, humble in heart, gentle, kind, and full of compassion.

Amen.
