Archbishop Maximus of the Apostolic Orthodox Church (Pennsylvania) shares the Gospel answer to the question:
Why was God “racist” and did choose only the Jewish people to be His chosen people? Would a “racist” God be worthy of worship?
Did God Favor the Jews? Here’s the Answer
The truth, as shown in the Jewish Old Testament, the Gospel of Christ, and even history, is different. In Genesis (part of the Torah), chapter 14, we’re told that Abraham—the forefather of the Jews—met Melchizedek, a priest of God Most High, and gave him a tithe. This indicates that there were other peoples besides Abraham’s descendants who worshiped God.
The Gospel also tells of wise men from the East (from Persia) who came and brought gifts to the newborn Jesus —another sign that peoples outside Israel recognized and worshiped the living God. The Bible also bears witness to Egyptians, among whom Moses was raised, who came to acknowledge the worship of the one true God.
So why did God choose the Jewish people? God chose Abraham because of his faith, obedience, and reverence. The Old Testament is a distinctly Jewish book, written by Jews and tied to the history of the Jewish people, so it naturally reflects their story and perspective.
As for why Christ came from among the Jews: He came from the lineage of Abraham—the righteous man who believed God, obeyed Him, and received the promise that through his descendants the Messiah would come: “And through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” (Genesis 22:18)
